Robbers Evidence: Exhibit C: Recent Trade History Part 3 – Recent Ex-Rangers Would Make a Better Team – Wrap-up

To summarize the Rangers team that could have been had the trio of Hicks/Cogen/DanielsHart not hemorrhaged more talent than they amassed and been so blatently cheap in doing so, below is a summary of the 25-man Texas Rangers roster that could/shoud have been.

But first, a key questions… besides Michael Young instead of DeRosa, what current Ranger(s) do you think could steal a job from this depth chart/lineup (first listed is the starter, but there are many possible defensive lineups given the versatility on the roster)?
C
Ivan Rodriguez
Rod Barajas

1B
Travis Hafner
Adrian Gonzalez
Mike Lamb

2B
Esteban German
Michael Young
Alfonso Soriano
Mike Lamb

SS
Michael Young
Alex Rodriguez

3B
Alex Rodriguez
Mike Lamb

RF
Carlos Lee
David Dellucci
Gary Matthews, Jr.
Alfonso Soriano

CF
Gary Matthews, Jr.
David Dellucci
Alfonso Soriano

LF
Alfonso Soriano
David Dellucci
Carlos Lee

DH
Adrian Gonzalez
Travis Hafner
Mike Lamb
David Dellucci
And second, I think more current Rangers could crack this coulda/shoulda been rotation and bullpen – but who do you think they are, in what spot and why?

SP
Kenny Rodgers
Chris Young
Estaban Loaiza
Doug Davis
Adam Eaton

Bullpen

Closer:  Francisco Cordero
SU Bryan Corey
LR Chan Ho Park
MR Fabio Castro
MR Darren Oliver
MR Brian Shouse
MR Aaron Sele
MR Dan Kolb

I’ll share my thoughts on the final coulda/shoulda been Texas Rangers 2007 25-man roster in my next post.

  2. That is the worst pitching staff. What’s your point? Spell check while your at it.

  3. rangersorrobbers

That staff would dominate the current Rangers staff.

  4. You’re right. Kenny Rogers and Esteban Loaiza have a 0.00 ERA. Mainly because they’ve been injured all season. Eaton has the wins, but his ERA sucks and you would’ve paid $11 million a year like you did with Padilla and Padilla doesn’t have injury issues. I agree, they gave up on Davis too early and Chris Young, of course, has been great. But that’s really one guy (Young) that would “dominate.”

And your bullpen is phenomenally worse than it is now.

Here is a much better starting rotation had the Rangers signed them when they were drafted or made the right decision on guys:

    Barry Zito
    Nick Lowry
    Chris Young
    Aaron Harang
    Doug Davis

    Bullpen:
    Kam Loe
    John Danks
    C.J. Wilson
    Coco Cordero
    Justin Duchscherer
    Dan Kolb
    Ryan Dempster
    Joaquin Benoit
    Frank Francisco

Now that’s a pitching staff. And it was all on the Rangers’ fingertips.

First, most of your bullpen is still with the Rangers. The point (if you’ll read the other posts in the series) was to look at ex-Rangers. Yes, I inserted Michael Young here as a transition to the next post.

Second, we’re vehemently agreeing here. We could argue this guy over that guy all day – that’s how many talented players the idiot Rangers have made bad decisions on – or, in most cases, let walk because of $ over talent.

The pemeise to this series was to consider this question: If Hicks, Cogen and DanielsHart were serious about building a championship team, then how in the world did they lose more talent than they collected? Answer: they were never serious about building a good team; they’ve always been more interested in stringing us fans along and milking us for our $ along the way.

That’s why it’s time for new ownership.

  6. I understand. I just don’t get some of the names you mention. For one, Mike Young is on the team. Two, other than Coco and Dan Kolb (who’s washed up now), who in your bullpen was worth keeping? I mean, considering how much Seattle paid Aaron Sele, you would’ve given him that much? Not being able to sign Zito and Lowry in the draft were much bigger snafus.

Secondly, David Dellucci? Nice fourth outfielder and spot DH, but you’d be crazy not to swap him for Tejeda. Mike Lamb? I’m sure the Rangers are missing his 51 RBIs a year.

I guess my contention with your list is that those are players (Soriano, Matthews Jr., Pudge, Chan Ho, Sele, Lee) who the Rangers would’ve had to spend gigantic dollars on to keep. And I don’t think having that “Dream Team” would’ve necessarily made this team better. I agree that the Rangers should spend more, but they should do it judiciously and not just paying for the big names with big numbers. We’ve had that for years and it’s gotten us very little.

I think the bigger problems have to do with the drafts, talent evaluation, developing players and being able sign guys you trade for (like Lee and Eaton, who had no intentions of resigning). That’s how teams like Florida, Detroit and others make it and win World Series.

And as far as the bullpen, if you took out the current Rangers, that leaves you with Coco, Duchscherer, Kolb, Danks, Dempster. That’s pretty salty and beats out the likes of Darren Oliver and Bryan Corey.

Stepping away from the which former Rangers are better debate, here’s the point:

How could Hicks/Daniels/Hart have that much talent in their organization and turn it into what’s on the roster today?

That’s like taking a Ferrari (or maybe just a Mercedes) and turning it into a Kia.

At the center is Hicks sole focus on trying to fleece as much money out of you, me and all fans as possible.

Why let Pudge or Rogers and so on walk as free agents (instead of trading them for more talent) when you weren’t going to sign them? Because it would have hurt short-term ticket sales! Instead they keep guys – even add guys – to stay competitive for the short term so we keep buying tickets and watching games into August or September.

Last year is a perfect example. Instead of trading guys like GMJ and DeRosa in the midst of career years to get long-term value, they hold on to them, bleed young talent out of the system to get Lee and inject false excitement into their fan base – which is mostly casual fans who don’t know enough to see that even if last year’s team had an offensive explosion large enough to make the post season, they weren’t going anywhere past there – probably getting swept considering their rotation.

But year after year, Hicks and team have made these short-sighted moves to keep hope alive long enough to maximize their short-term profits.

And that – combined with the other problems you note – led the team to where it’s at today.

When you turn 4 MVP awards, a batting title, 17 Silver Slugger Awards and 16 Gold Gove Awards since 1994 into what the Rangers have today, it shows how horrible the owner and front office really are!
